Prostate

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder in the pelvic area of the male anatomy. It surrounds the upper part of the urethra, which merges with the ejaculatory ducts formed by the vas deferens and the seminal vesicle.

It surrounds the upper part of the urethra, which merges with the ejaculatory ducts formed by the vas deferens and the seminal vesicle. As the back wall of the prostate is directly adjacent to the rectum, a part of the prostate can be felt by a physician during a urological examination. The prostate consists of two lobes, which are enclosed by a solid capsule of connective tissue. The function of the prostate is to secrete a fluid, milky or white in appearance, which makes up a major part of semen and enhances the motility and fertility of sperm.

By the age of 20, a male’s prostate reaches a weight of about 20 grams. With age, many men experience an enlargement of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), which causes discomfort during urination.
