Bladder sphincter prosthesis

In the case of higher-grade urinary incontinence, an artificial sphincter may need to be implanted.

For this purpose, an approx. 1-cm-wide cuff is placed around the urethra. This fills passively from an abdominal reservoir with liquid. Through the resulting pressure, the urethra is closed. In order to empty the bladder, there is a small pump under the skin of the scrotum, with which the cuff can be emptied, thus making it possible to dissolve the water.

This operation is performed through an incision in the scrotum and takes approx. 90–150 minutes. A subsequent hospital stay of approx. 3–10 days is required. The bladder catheter that was inserted during surgery will be removed as soon as possible. The sphincter system can only be activated after approx. 6 weeks, however, when all components have healed well.
