In the case of an irritable bladder, botulinum toxin (Botox®)is often injected into the bladder muscle. Botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin, inhibits synaptic transmission from the nerve cells to the muscle, thereby attenuating the hyperexcitability of the bladder muscle for approx. 8-12 months.
When the effect wears off, the treatment can be repeated without problems. The procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia using cystoscopy.
