Medicinal therapy of benign prostate enlargement

As a first step, a medicinal treatment (selective alpha-blockers) should be initiated.

The main principle is to relax the muscles of the prostate. The diameter of the prostatic urethra is thereby increased, and the drainage is improved. Medicinal treatment can often postpone surgery by several years. Herbal supplements can also be administered. Not all preparations have been proven to shrink the prostate. Nevertheless, they often positively influence the progression of the disease. After failure of drug therapy, TUR of the prostate represents the classic surgical procedure.
