Nephroureterectomy

Nephroureterectomy is usually indicated in the case renal pelvis cancer or ureteral cancer. The entire kidney including the ureter and corresponding bladder cuff must be removed.

Using the bladder cuff, the junction of the ureter and bladder are removed along with surrounding bladder tissue. The bladder is opened, and the defect must be closed using conventional sutures. For this procedure, at least two incisions are usually necessary (one in the flank and a second on the corresponding side above the bladder).

The procedure is mostly performed with the DaVinci robot and is minimally invasive endoscopic surgery.
