Surgical removal of urinary stones

Until the end of the 1970s, surgery was the only method for removing urinary stones. Using a cross-section, the ureter, renal pelvis, or kidney is freed and opened.

The stone is removed, and the tissue is sutured. The procedure can be repeated up to two more times on the kidney. After this, there is a risk of losing the kidney as a whole. This procedure has become extremely rare.
