TUR of the prostate (TURP)

With this procedure, the prostate is enucleated from the inside using an electrical loop and a corresponding high-frequency current.

Using the same loop but a different current energy, haemorrhaging vessels can be obliterated and thereby closed. In terms of efficiency and side effects, transurethral electroresection is currently the gold standard against which all other methods are measured. For very large prostates, open enucleation by the surgeon is recommended. Here, the bladder is opened via a small abdominal incision. The benign portions are then manually removed by the surgeon. This procedure should not be confused with radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer.
