Urethral diagnostics: X-ray imaging of the urethra with contrast agent (urethrography)

Using a fine catheter (rigid or flexible), the urethra is filled with contrast agent. The urethra is observed and X-rayed using a lateral beam and image intensifier. Typical indications for urethrography are urethral strictures, urethral diverticulum (bulges of the urethra) or urethral fistulae (unnatural connections of the urethra to other organs or body cavities).
