Infected ureter - Emergency

A renal or ureteral stone can cause colic. This is not a true medical emergency, even if it is extremely painful for the patient.

However, it becomes dangerous when an infected ureteral causes congestion of the urinary tract. In this case, life-threateningSsepsis (blood poisoning) , develops within a short time and is often accompanied by circulatory failure.

Therapy

If an accumulation is present, it must be bypassed. This can be done via a bladder catheter, through a Ureteral Stent (pigtail) or possibly by direct drainage. In a second phase of treatment, high-dose and broad-spectrum antibiotics, circulatory support, and intensive/ medical supervision follow.
