Testicular torsion - EMERGENCY

Testicular torsion typically occurs in males between 12 and 25 years old. This leads to a 180 to 360 degree rotation of the testis in the testicular compartment. The vascular stem is twisted to the extent that the blood supply is disconnected.

Typical symptoms include the sudden onset of severe pain in the testicular compartment followed by strong sensitivity to touch. The testicle is usually somewhat raised..

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is carried out by means of sonography and duplex sonography, which can measure blood flow to the testicle.

Therapy

After initial therapy, the testicle should untwist within six hours. Later intervention poses the risk that the testicle is already dead as a result of a lack of blood flow. In this case, it must be surgically removed.
